Starting this morning, the Thursday market is indoors. The Tahoe City Farmers Market packed up at Commons Beach after its final summer date on Oct. 22. Today it reopens inside Boatworks Mall for its Fall Harvest Markets, running every Thursday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Dec. 17. There is no market on Thanksgiving, Nov. 26. The Tahoe City Downtown Association's event calendar promises "seasonal goods, local vendors and more while shopping indoors in Tahoe City."
The market has wintered at Boatworks before. A year ago, the people who own Boatworks were planning to tear it down. This winter it is still standing because of a filing in federal bankruptcy court, and the court's next scheduled look at the case is on the morning of the season's last market.
Indoors at Boatworks Is Already a Tradition
The market's move into the mall goes back to at least 2023, and the dates in each published schedule follow the same pattern:
| Season | Indoor run at Boatworks | Thanksgiving gap |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | Oct. 26 to Dec. 21 | Thanksgiving skipped |
| 2024 | Oct. 31 to Dec. 19 | No market Nov. 28 |
| 2026 | Oct. 29 to Dec. 17 | No market Nov. 26 |
That works out to seven Thursdays this year. The market's visitor page says cash is what vendors prefer, and most vendors also take credit cards. Lisa Boudreau, named as manager in the market's own newsletter, runs the operation.
The space works for a market. The Sierra Sun has described the mall's "quaint wooden features, vaulted ceilings, warm lights and a brick-laid gathering space that often holds markets and events." That made Boatworks a natural winter home. In 2026, it also made the market's schedule depend on what happens to the building.
How the Mall Reached This Winter
The path from last November's plan to this morning's market ran through three dates:
- November 2025. In a Sierra Sun report, owner MJD Capital Partners said it was aiming to finalize redevelopment approval, permitting and entitlements in 2026, with demolition soon after. The paper noted that if demolition did not happen before Oct. 15, 2026, it might have to wait until the following spring. The plan covers the Boatworks Mall site, the Inn at Boatworks and the El Dorado Savings Bank parcel, and calls for hotel lodging, a spa, residential condominiums and independent commercial spaces.
- August 11, 2026. The property had been in foreclosure since January, with a public auction set for Aug. 12 at 10:30 a.m. The day before, Boatworks at Tahoe LLC filed for Chapter 11 reorganization in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of California. According to the Sierra Sun's account of the filing, the notice of sale listed more than $15.5 million in unpaid loan balance and other charges.
- October 15, 2026. The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency closed the grading and digging season for permitted projects. Construction sites across the Basin must be winterized from Oct. 15 to May 1, and the season opens again May 1, 2027.
The company said the mall and the Inn at Boatworks would stay open while it asks the court to approve a reorganization plan. "Staying open is crucial for the business, the employees, and the community," Marie Murphy, CEO of MJD Capital Partners, told the Sierra Sun. She also said the redevelopment is still the goal: "We continue to believe a mixed-use redevelopment is the best way to revitalize Boatworks and preserve its unique character."
Taken together, the three dates explain this season. Vendor tables can go up under the vaulted ceilings again because the building got through August, the window for earthwork has closed until spring, and the owner has said publicly that it intends to keep the doors open.
The Mall's Neighbors This Winter
Much of the mall's foot traffic has come from the restaurant on the water. Jake's on the Lake reopened in June for what its ownership called its "final summer." Managing partner Jeff Hill told the Sierra Sun that staff had been told from the start that the season would be "Jake's last hurrah." The plan was to stay open "through the end of October," though the restaurant said that timing could change. Chef Ronnie Miranda, a Culinary Institute of America graduate, led the kitchen this summer.
If that plan holds, these are the first indoor market weeks in years without Jake's operating next door. When the restaurant closed for winter last November, mall shop owners called it an anchor. The owner of the Lucky Horseshoe told the Sierra Sun, "They're a part of this place." The shops responded with a message to customers: "we're still here."
Shops named in that coverage and on the Boatworks directory include:
- Tahoe City Chocolates, which the Sierra Sun reported has sold chocolate, candy and ice cream in the mall for more than 40 years
- Tahoe Wine Collective, pouring sustainably farmed boutique wines from around the world and the Sierra Foothills. Owner Allison Yonto called the mall "still a good little nook of Tahoe City."
- The Lucky Horseshoe, with apparel, accessories and vintage pieces
- Camila's at Tahoe, a women's boutique
- The SNOW Sports Museum, along with yoga and fitness studios, a library branch and a bank
The Sierra Sun story ran a year ago and the directory is older than that, so it's worth checking a shop's hours before a Thursday visit. On market mornings, those storefronts are the ones closest to the vendor tables.
Seven Thursdays That End on a Court Date
The bankruptcy docket shows the case moving through the fall. On Sept. 24, the court granted motions on cash collateral and the management agreement, and related orders followed in early October. According to the case listing, the debtor's status conference has been continued to Dec. 17, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. in Sacramento.
Dec. 17 is also the last Fall Harvest Market of the season. While the court takes up the case in Sacramento, the final indoor market of 2026 will be about two and a half hours into its morning at Boatworks.
The redevelopment application is a separate process. Placer County told the Sierra Sun last year that the application was under review with the Tahoe branch of its Community Development Resource Agency, and that the applicant was working through engineering and design features that would shape the project's design and environmental analysis. With TRPA's grading season closed until May 1, 2027, the window for earthwork at Boatworks doesn't reopen until spring.
The Rest of the Season Runs Through Downtown
The market's indoor weeks overlap with a busy stretch of the Tahoe City Downtown Association's calendar, and much of it is within a short walk of the mall:
- Nov. 6 to 8: For the first time, North Tahoe galleries join the Placer Artists Tour, a free, self-guided tour. Tahoe City stops include The Eadington Gallery, Kiwi Kamera Gallery and North Tahoe Arts.
- Nov. 28: Small Business Saturday brings promotions, pop-ups and specials to Tahoe City, the West Shore and Alpine Meadows. The same day, TCDA adds something new: a Community Christmas Tree Lighting at the Tahoe City Winter Sports Park, which opens for the season the same day. Santa will be there, along with performances by the Tahoe Lake Elementary School Choir and Truckee Tahoe Community Chorus.
- Dec. 4, 11 and 18: The Holly Jolly Strolls bring extended shopping hours, free gift wrapping, caroling, Santa visits, seasonal menus and a free event shuttle. Full details are still to be announced.
The second and third strolls fall on the Fridays after the last two markets. Thursday morning shopping inside Boatworks and Friday evening shopping along North Lake Boulevard bookend the same two weeks in December.
